# Lesen & Schreiben A1 — Abschnitt A: Personen

**Note on answers**: this PDF is missing its official Lösungen
(answer-key) pages — every mirror copy found online was cropped the same
way before the answer key. Answers below marked **[abgeleitet]**
(derived) are mine, worked out directly from context because they're
unambiguous (only one grammatically correct completion exists). Anything
genuinely open-ended (the student's own info, free writing) is marked
**[offen]** and left as a task, not an answer.

## Overview

- Skill focus: Lesen & Schreiben (reading comprehension + guided
  writing, not vocabulary drill — each task reads a short text/dialogue
  first, then writes a parallel one)
- Topic: introducing yourself and others, a family registration form,
  sentence/word boundaries and capitalization rules, formal vs. informal
  address
- Relates to *Menschen* Lektion(en): **L1** (heißen/kommen/sein
  conjugation, du vs. Sie), **L3** (Familie — A2's form extends this into
  a real-world registration-form format), **L10** (aus der/in der
  Türkei, aus der/in der Schweiz, aus den/in den USA — A1's country
  table is the same exception list Menschen uses).

## Grammar covered

### A1: Präsens of heißen, kommen, wohnen, sein — reinforces Menschen L1
Full conjugation table practice (ich/du/er,sie and wir/ihr/sie) plus
sentence building with country names, reinforcing the
no-article-vs.-article-country pattern already seen in Menschen L10 and
in the Wortschatz & Grammatik book: most countries take no article
(Deutschland, Spanien), but **die Türkei**, **die Schweiz**, and **die
USA (Pl)** take an article and use **aus der/in der** (or **aus den/in
den** for the plural USA).

### A3: Satzgrenzen und Großschreibung
**Tipp box — Was schreibt man groß?**
- The **first word** of a sentence.
- **Nomen** (nouns): der Name, der Beruf, die Lehrerin, der Tag, die
  Tasche.
- **Namen und Titel** (proper names/titles): Paul, München, Frau Müller,
  Petra.
- **Formelle Wörter** (formal address forms): Sie, Ihnen, Ihre.

This is the book's first explicit statement of German capitalization
rules — useful standing reference, since Menschen A1.1 uses correct
capitalization throughout but never states the rule this directly.

### A4: Formell (Sie) vs. informell (du)
Practical categorization of which relationships use **Sie** (strangers
on the street, customer/salesperson, employee/boss) vs. **du** (friends,
family, close colleagues) — extends Menschen L1's du/Sie introduction
with concrete real-world categories.

## Exercise summary

1. **A1 Wer ist das?** — (1a) complete 4 self-introduction texts
   (name/origin/residence) from word banks; (1b) conjugate
   heißen/kommen/wohnen/sein for ich/du/er,sie; (1c) complete 3
   two-person dialogues; (1d) conjugate kommen/wohnen/sein for
   wir/ihr/sie; (1e) build 8 full sentences from word fragments, using
   the country-article reference table.
2. **A2 Familie Becker – Ein Formular** — (2a) read a short text about
   the Becker family; (2b) transfer that information into a blank
   registration form [offen — asks the student for their own family's
   info in the second half]; (2c) read a filled-in form for the Aydin
   family and write a parallel descriptive text [offen — guided free
   writing].
3. **A3 Wortschlange** — (3a) mark word boundaries in a run-on "word
   snake"; (3b) write out the 6 resulting sentences/exchanges and note
   which ones pair as Q&A; (3c) correct capitalization in a short
   paragraph about a trip to Salzburg.
4. **A4 Wie geht's?** — (4a) sort 6 relationship types into
   Sie-formal/du-informal columns; (4b) write a matching formal and
   informal "how are you" dialogue; (4c) sort 5 responses to "Wie
   geht's?" from very positive to very negative.

answer.

**A2 (2c)** [offen, model text abgeleitet from the given form data]: "Das
ist Familie Aydin. Osman Aydin ist am 21. Juni 1973 in Ankara geboren. Er
ist erwerbstätig. Osman ist mit Gülan verheiratet. Gülan Aydin ist am 1.
Februar 1972 in Istanbul geboren. Sie ist auch erwerbstätig. Osman und
Gülan haben eine Tochter: Yara, geboren 1999." (A reasonable model
answer — the exercise is free writing, so other correct phrasings exist.)

**A3 (3a/3b)** [abgeleitet]:
1. Wie heißt du? / Mein Name ist Paul.
2. Er kommt aus München.
3. Was ist sie von Beruf? / Sie ist Lehrerin.
4. Guten Tag, Frau Müller! Wie geht es Ihnen? / Danke, gut! Und Ihnen?

**A4 (4a)** [abgeleitet]: **Sie (formell)**: Leute auf der Straße, Kunde

Familie, Gute Kollegen.

**A4 (4b)** [abgeleitet, one valid version]: **Sie (formell)**: "Guten
Tag, wie geht es Ihnen? — Danke, gut, und Ihnen? — Auch gut, danke."
**du (informell)**: "Hallo, wie geht's? — Danke, gut, und dir? — Auch
gut, danke."

**A4 (4c)** [abgeleitet]: sehr gut → gut → es geht → nicht so gut →
schlecht (positive to negative spectrum, matching the smiley-face scale
shown).

## Notes / gotchas

- **This whole book is read-then-write, not vocab drill** — each task
  presents a model text/dialogue first and asks for a parallel
  production, which is good complex-sentence practice but means "the
  answer" is sometimes one of several valid phrasings (A2's 2c, A4's 4b)
  rather than a single fixed string. Treat those as model answers, not
  the only correct ones.
- **A1's country-article table is the exact same short exception list**
  seen already in Menschen L10 and in the Wortschatz & Grammatik book
  (Abschnitt A, M) — die Türkei, die Schweiz, die USA. By this point the
  student has seen it three times across materials; good candidate for
  "you should have this memorized by now."
- **A3's capitalization Tipp box is worth treating as a standing
  reference** whenever the student writes in German — it's the clearest,
  most explicit statement of the rule across all three books so far.
- **Because the Lösungen are missing, verify anything flagged
  [abgeleitet] against your own understanding before fully trusting it**
  — these are carefully worked out from unambiguous context, but they
  are not publisher-verified the way the Wortschatz & Grammatik book's
  answers were.
