# Lektion 3 — Das ist meine Mutter.
Kursbuch S. 17–20 · Arbeitsbuch S. 18–23
## Overview
- Topic: Familie (family)
- Communicative goals: Hören/Lesen — Drehbuchausschnitt (screenplay
excerpt); Sprechen — über die Familie sprechen ("Das sind meine Eltern.")
and über Sprachkenntnisse sprechen ("Ich spreche sehr gut Englisch.")
- New grammar focus: Possessivartikel mein/dein (+ plural meine/deine);
Ja-/Nein-Fragen vs. W-Fragen vs. Aussagen (word order); ja/nein/doch
(doch to contradict a negative question); verbs with vowel change
(sprechen: ich spreche → du sprichst → er/sie spricht)
- Characters: Herbert & Elvira (comic misunderstanding sketch — "Ist das
deine Frau?" / "Nein, das ist meine Mutter."); Mark Poppenreuther's
family tree (Carl & Helga → Bernd & Olga → Mark & Angelica) — a family of
actors except Mark, who studies physics.
- This lesson closes Modul 1 (Lektionen 1–3); the Kursbuch and Arbeitsbuch
both follow with module-wrap material (Lesemagazin, Film-Stationen,
Projekt Landeskunde, Ausklang / Wiederholungsstation,
Selbsteinschätzung, Rückblick) that isn't lesson-specific and isn't
covered in this file.

## Grammar (Kursbuch S. 20)
### Possessivartikel mein/dein
| | maskulin | feminin | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich → | **mein** Bruder | **meine** Schwester | **meine** Eltern |
| du → | **dein** Vater | **deine** Frau | **deine** Eltern |
- Masculine singular: no ending (mein/dein)
- Feminine singular and all plural: **-e** ending (meine/deine)
### Ja-/Nein-Frage, W-Frage und Aussage — word order
| Type | Word 1 | Position 2 (verb) | rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ja-/Nein-Frage | — | Ist | das deine Frau? |
| W-Frage | Wer | ist | das? |
| Aussage | Das | ist | meine Frau. |
(Ja/Nein questions put the verb first, with no question word — this is new
compared to Lektionen 1–2, which only drilled W-Fragen and Aussagen.)
### ja / nein / doch
| Question | Positive answer | Negative answer |
|---|---|---|
| Ist das deine Frau? (positive question) | Ja, (das ist meine Frau). | Nein, (das ist nicht meine Frau). |
| Das ist nicht deine Frau? (negative question) | **Doch**, (das ist meine Frau). | Nein, (das ist nicht meine Frau). |
**doch** is the key new word: it's used instead of *ja* to contradict a
negative question — answering "yes, actually it is" to something phrased
as "isn't it...?"
### Verb sprechen — vowel-change conjugation (e → i)
| | sprechen |
|---|---|
| ich | spreche |
| du | **sprichst** |
| er/sie | **spricht** |
| wir | sprechen |
| ihr | sprecht |
| sie/Sie | sprechen |
This is the first "stem-vowel-changing" verb pattern in the course (e→i in
du/er-sie forms only) — flagged because more verbs will follow this
pattern later (e.g. essen, geben, nehmen).
## Communication patterns (Kursbuch S. 20)
| Situation | Phrase(s) |
|---|---|
| Introduce family | Das sind meine Eltern. / Das ist meine Mutter. |
| Ask/deny relation | Ist Ewa deine Schwester? — Nein, Ewa ist nicht meine Schwester. Ewa ist meine Freundin. |
| Ask language skills | Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie / sprichst du? |
| State language skills | Ich spreche (sehr gut / gut / ein bisschen) Deutsch und Englisch. |
## Course book exercises (Kursbuch, S. 17–20)
1. Listening — look at a photo, hear a claim, mark glaube ich / glaube ich
nicht (Herbert & the woman in the photo)
2. Listening — true/false about Mark's family (actors) monologue
3. Drehbuch-Ausschnitt (screenplay excerpt) — read & listen to the
Herbert/Elvira "is that your wife?/no, my mother" sketch; fill in the
mein/dein table from it; then role-play similar dialogues with swapped
relations (deine Frau—meine Oma, etc.)
4. Grammar discovery — mark verbs in the 3a text; complete the
W-Frage/Aussage/Ja-Nein-Frage table
5. ja/nein/doch — fill in from the 3a text, then practice with a partner
6. Listening — Marks Familie: fill in the family tree (Bildlexikon) for
Carl, Helga, Bernd, Olga, Mark, Angelica; then role-play being a family
member and describing relations
7. Guess-the-relation game — write 4 names, others guess if they're
Kollege/Freund/Partner etc.
8. Speaking — interview a partner about a family member, take notes
(Name/Beruf/Alter/Wohnort/Familienstand/Kinder)
9. Mini-Projekt "Ein Land – viele Sprachen" — mark which language is
spoken where in Switzerland (Deutsch/Französisch/Italienisch/
Rätoromanisch); say which languages you speak; class language survey
## Workbook exercises (Arbeitsbuch, S. 18–23)

across a family dialogue

2. Sort sentences into Ja-/Nein-Fragen vs. W-Fragen/Aussagen
3. Sentence-building from scrambled words (wer/das/ist → Wer ist das?, etc.)
4. Partner speaking practice — write similar sentences, partner responds
5. Multiple choice with emoji — answer ja/nein/doch to statements about
Lisa, kids, Vroni, Roberto
6. Fill in ja/nein/doch across 5 short exchanges

Herbert: Doch. Sie ist 74.
Elvira: Ach Herbert! Ist das deine Frau?

Ich studiere Physik in Stuttgart.

**Aufgabe 3a**: audio only, refers back to the Kursbuch printed dialogue
(no separate transcript beyond what's shown on the page).
**Aufgabe 6a** (family vocabulary, spoken list for the Bildlexikon):

Winfried joke from Lektion 1's audio):
```
Frau: Ja, hallo? Wer ist denn da?
Winfried: Hallo! Wie geht's? Ich heiße Winfried ...
WINFRIED! Baramm ... bambam ... bambam ... baraa-aahh! ...
Köln, in Frankfurt? Wohnt er in Stuttgart? Wohnt er in Hamburg?
Wo wohnt Winfried? Wo wohnt Winfried?
Chor: [repeats WINFRIED!/Baramm chorus]
Frau: Wo wohnt Winfried? Wohnt er in Schwerin? Wohnt er in München, in
Bonn, in Berlin? Wohnt er in Bamberg? Wohnt er in Wien?
Wo wohnt Winfried? Wo wohnt Winfried?
Chor: [repeats WINFRIED!/Baramm chorus]
```
(This is a comic sing-along that recycles city names and the running
"Winfried" gag from Lektion 1 — good listening material for city-name
recognition, not a real dialogue to model speech from.)
### Arbeitsbuch audio
No standalone Lektion 3 dialogue transcript — Training: Aussprache Übung 1
and Übung 3 reference the printed Arbeitsbuch S. 21 exercises directly
(the spoken content is the same intonation-practice sentences shown in the
Training: Aussprache exercise list above).
## Answer key highlights
**Kursbuch:**

- 2: richtig (true): a, b, e; falsch (false): c, d
- 3a: meine Mutter; deine Frau
- 4a: ist; ist; Ist (verb fill-in, top to bottom)

mein Vater; Olga → meine Mutter; Bernd und Olga → meine Eltern;

## Notes / gotchas
- **doch** is the standout new concept this lesson — it only appears when
contradicting a *negative* question ("Ist das nicht deine Frau?" →
"Doch!" = "yes it is"). Using *ja* there instead of *doch* is a very
common learner mistake and worth drilling deliberately.
- **mein/dein** follow the same -e-for-feminine-and-plural pattern that
will recur with *kein-* and other possessives later — worth treating
this as the first instance of a recurring paradigm ("ein-words").
- **sprechen**'s e→i vowel change (du sprichst, er/sie spricht) is the
first stem-vowel-changing verb — flag any new verb behaving this way
going forward (this pattern group includes essen, geben, helfen, nehmen,
sehen, treffen in later lessons).
- Word order recap: this lesson is where Ja-/Nein-Fragen (verb-first, no
question word) formally enters, completing the three sentence-type
patterns (Aussage / W-Frage / Ja-Nein-Frage) alongside verb-always-in-
position-2 for statements and W-Fragen.
- This lesson closes Modul 1. If continuing to track Lesemagazin/
Film-Stationen/Projekt Landeskunde/Ausklang/Wiederholungsstation/
Selbsteinschätzung content would be useful for review purposes, that
can be added as a separate "Modul 1 Rückblick" note later — it wasn't
included here to keep this file scoped to Lektion 3 itself.
