# Lektion 5 — Was ist das? – Das ist ein F.
Kursbuch S. 29–32 · Arbeitsbuch S. 36–41
## Overview
- Topic: Gegenstände, Produkte (objects, products)
- Communicative goals: Sprechen — nach Wörtern fragen und Wörter nennen
("Wie heißt das auf Deutsch?"); um Wiederholung bitten ("Noch einmal,
bitte."); etwas beschreiben ("Die Brille ist rot."); Lesen —
Produktinformationen; Schreiben — ein Formular ausfüllen
- New grammar focus: indefiniter Artikel ein/eine; Negativartikel
kein/keine (for indefinite/unspecified nouns — contrast with Lektion 3's
*nicht*, which negates verbs/definite statements)
- Running gag: Frau Paulig at the eye doctor keeps misreading letters on
the eye chart, setting up the "Was ist das?" theme of the lesson.

## Grammar (Kursbuch S. 32)
### Indefiniter Artikel ein/eine und Negativartikel kein/keine
| Gender | indefiniter Artikel | Negativartikel |
|---|---|---|
| maskulin | Das ist **ein** Schlüssel. | Das ist **kein** Schlüssel. |
| neutral | Das ist **ein** Buch. | Das ist **kein** Buch. |
| feminin | Das ist **eine** Brille. | Das ist **keine** Brille. |
- maskulin/neutral: **ein** (no ending); feminin: **eine** (-e ending) —
same -e-for-feminine pattern seen with mein/dein in Lektion 3
- **kein/keine** follows the identical pattern (kein for masc./neut., keine
for fem.) and is the negation used for indefinite nouns — different from
Lektion 3's **nicht**, which negates verbs/definite statements ("Das ist
**nicht** der Tisch" vs. "Das ist **kein** Tisch")
## Communication patterns (Kursbuch S. 32)
| Situation | Phrase(s) |
|---|---|
| Ask a word | Entschuldigung, wie heißt das auf Deutsch? Wie schreibt man ...? Das ist ein/eine ... |
| Ask for repetition | Noch einmal, bitte. Wie bitte? |
| Thank / respond | Danke. — Bitteschön. / Bitte. (Gern.) / Kein Problem. |
| Describe an object | Die Brille ist aus Kunststoff/... Die Brille ist rund/eckig/..., rot/braun/... und modern/... |
## Course book exercises (Kursbuch, S. 29–32)
1. "Frau Paulig beim Augenarzt" — listening: eye-chart letter guessing
game, practicing "Ich glaube, das ist ein P. / Ja, das glaube ich auch.
/ Nein, das ist ein F."
2. Comic "Was ist das?" — read/complete a table from a comic strip
contrasting ein/eine vs. kein/keine; translate the ein/kein contrast
into your own language; play a guessing game drawing objects from the
Bildlexikon or Lektion 4's furniture
3. "Was gehört zusammen?" — match product descriptions (eyewear ads) to
photos; read again and fill in materials/colors/shapes vocabulary from
the ad text
4. "Eine Designerbrille für Frau Paulig" — draw glasses on a photo, write
a product description for it, then find the matching description
written by a classmate
5. Speaking practice — describing products, partner work (S.84)
6. "Wie heißt das auf Deutsch?" — listening: match dialogues to photos of
objects (watch/umbrella/match/wallet/soap); fill in ein/eine + correct
pronoun (er/es/sie) + matching color; identify who says which phrase in
an asking-for-a-word dialogue; partner practice asking about unfamiliar
words (S.85)
7. "Im Internet bestellen" — read an online order form, identify missing
info (Bestellnummer, Produktname, Menge); fill out an order form with
your own choice of product and personal details
## Workbook exercises (Arbeitsbuch, S. 36–41)
1. Label 10 objects with their article (der/das/die), matched to photos
2. Fill in ein/eine and der/das/die across 5 short object-description
sentences
3. Multiple choice — correct article (eine/die, eine/die, ein/der, etc.)
in 4 short shop/dialogue exchanges
4. Fill in ein/eine vs. kein/keine across 4 paired photo comparisons
(woman/no woman, armchair/no armchair sofa, etc.)
5. "Was ist das? Was glauben Sie?" — write guesses using kein...das ist
ein... pattern for 4 line-drawing objects, then create your own for a
partner
6. nicht oder kein-? — multiple choice across 5 sentences, distinguishing

9. Fill in colors and shapes (Silbenrätsel/word puzzle) and color them in
10. Write full product descriptions from bullet-point specs (adjective +
material + age + price), following a modeled example
11. "Wie schreibt man das?" — match question fragments to build an
asking-and-spelling dialogue, then complete a similar dialogue

### Training: Aussprache (Satzakzent — sentence stress)
1. Listen and mark whether the rule is "always on the last word" or "on
the important/new information" — confirm: **stress falls on the
important or new information**, not a fixed position
2. Mark the sentence stress in 5 example sentences, listen & compare

### Test (self-check, with point values)

## Notes / gotchas
- **ein/eine vs. kein/keine** is the headline grammar point, and it
crucially does *not* replace **nicht** from Lektion 3 — the two coexist:
*nicht* negates verbs and definite-article statements ("Das ist **nicht**
der Tisch"), while *kein-* negates indefinite nouns ("Das ist **kein**
Tisch"). Worth drilling the contrast explicitly, since English "not a"
covers both cases and doesn't signal which German form to use.
- The eye-doctor comic (Frau Paulig) and the "Was ist das?" comic strip
both exist purely to motivate the ein/kein contrast through
guess-the-object play — good source material if generating similar
practice dialogues.
- Materials vocabulary (Glas/Holz/Metall/Papier/Plastik) recurs from here
on any time an object is described — pairs naturally with the
der/das/die + er/es/sie pattern from Lektion 4.
- This lesson closes with a page of practical vocabulary (Adresse,
E-Mail, Fax, Geburtsdatum, PLZ, Straße, Telefon) for filling out forms —
worth treating as its own functional cluster since it's likely to recur
in real-world tasks (registrations, deliveries) beyond the textbook.
