Plural review, definite/indefinite/zero article choice, full Possessivartikel case declension, and nicht/kein negation (pp. 79-84). Flags J4's Akkusativ/Dativ Possessivartikel endings as grammar beyond Menschen A1.1's Nominativ-only mein/dein. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

# Wortschatz & Grammatik A1 — Abschnitt J: Nomen und Artikel
Seiten 79–84 (Teil 2 Grammatik) · Lösungen S. 113 · Übungen J1–J5
## Overview
- Skill focus: Grammatik (plural formation, definite vs. indefinite
article choice, Possessivartikel declension, negation with
nicht/kein)
- Topic: plural nouns in a shopping-list/family context, definite vs.
indefinite article usage in a connected text, possessive articles
across all persons and cases, sentence negation
- Relates to *Menschen* Lektion(en): **L3** (Possessivartikel mein/dein —
J4 extends this to **all** persons: sein/ihr/unser/euer/Ihr, which
Menschen A1.1 only partially covers), **L5/L6** (ein/eine, plural
endings — J1/J2 direct reinforcement), **L2/L6** (Negation mit
nicht/kein — J5 reinforces and extends this). **New beyond Menschen
A1.1**: J3's systematic definite-vs-indefinite-article decision
exercise (including the "zero article" case for plurals/uncountables)
is more explicit than anything in the main course; J4's full
Possessivartikel case declension (Nominativ/Akkusativ/Dativ endings
across all persons) goes beyond Menschen A1.1, which only teaches
Possessivartikel in the Nominativ.
## Grammar covered
### J1–J2: Plural review (reinforces Menschen L6)
Shopping-list and "we have twins now" contexts drilling plural forms of
food nouns, quantity containers (Packung, Dose, Becher, Flasche), and
household/baby items.
**Tipp**: always learn nouns with their article **and** plural form
together (die Frau, -en; das Kind, -er).
### J3: Bestimmter vs. unbestimmter Artikel — **more explicit than Menschen A1.1**
A connected "dream house" text where every noun mention requires
choosing definite (der/die/das), indefinite (ein/eine), or **no article
at all** (for plurals/uncountable nouns in a general sense, marked "–" in
the exercise). General pattern:
- **Indefinite/no article**: first mention of something, or speaking
generally (Ich möchte einen Kamin — a fireplace, not specified which).
- **Definite article**: something already mentioned, unique, or specific
(Das Schlafzimmer hat einen Balkon — "the" bedroom, already
established).
- **Zero article**: plural nouns used generally (Blumen, Bäume, Tomaten —
"flowers" in general, not specific ones).
### J4: Possessivartikel — full declension, **new beyond Menschen A1.1**
Menschen A1.1 (L3) introduces mein/dein in the **Nominativ** only. This
exercise drills **all persons** (mein/dein/sein/ihr/unser/euer/Ihr) **and**
shows their **Akkusativ/Dativ** endings changing with the noun's gender
and case:
| Person | Nominativ (der) | Akkusativ (den) | Dativ (dem/der) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | mein | meinen | meinem |
| du | dein | deinen | deinem |
| er | sein | seinen | seinem |
| sie | ihr | ihren | ihrem |
| wir | unser | unseren | unserem |
| ihr | euer | euren | eurem |
| Sie | Ihr | Ihren | Ihrem |
(Feminine/plural nouns take -e in Nominativ/Akkusativ and -er in Dativ,
following the same pattern as ein/eine/kein — e.g. meine Schwester,
meiner Schwester.)
### J5: Negation — nicht vs. kein (reinforces Menschen L2/L6)
Full-sentence negation practice: **kein/keine** negates an indefinite-
article or zero-article noun (keinen großen Fisch, keine Fahrradtour);
**nicht** negates everything else (verbs, adjectives, definite-article
nouns, adverbs) — "Ich bin nicht zum Fischen gegangen," "Das Wetter war
nicht gut."
## Exercise summary
1. **J1 Einkauf für eine Großfamilie** — complete a shopping list with
plural noun forms (with quantities).
2. **J2 Wir haben Zwillinge!** — pluralize 15 singular items ("not just
one X, but two...") for a family with twins.
3. **J3 Nur ein Traum …** — choose definite/indefinite/no article for 27
blanks in a connected "dream house" description.
4. **J4 Was zu wem gehört** — fill in the correctly declined
Possessivartikel across 8 short first/second/third-person texts.
5. **J5 Falsch gedacht!** — rewrite 12 positive predictions as negated
past-tense statements (nicht/kein), in a "what really happened"
narrative twist.

## Notes / gotchas
- **J4 is the standout "new grammar" item here** — Menschen A1.1 never
drills Possessivartikel case endings (only the bare Nominativ form
mein/dein). If the student hasn't covered Akkusativ/Dativ articles
formally yet, this exercise will feel like a jump; consider it optional
enrichment rather than required review.
- **J3's "zero article" case is worth explaining explicitly**: German
drops the article for plural/uncountable nouns used in a general sense
(Blumen sind schön = "flowers are beautiful" in general), which has no
clean English equivalent since English also often drops the article
there — but German learners from article-heavy L1s (Romance languages)
may over-apply an article here.
- **J5 reinforces nicht/kein** but assumes comfort with Perfekt (L11/L12)
since all the negated sentences are in past tense — good combined
review if both grammar points are already familiar.
- **The Possessivartikel pattern (J4) mirrors ein/eine/kein's declension**
— worth pointing out to the student that once they know how
ein/eine/kein changes by case and gender, mein/dein/etc. follow exactly
the same endings.
