# Wortschatz & Grammatik A1 — Abschnitt Q: Zahlen

Note: this is the **final section of the whole book**. Wortschatz &
Grammatik A1 is complete after this Abschnitt.

### Q1: Cardinal numbers as words — reinforces Menschen L4
Addition puzzle requiring numbers to be spelled out in full
(dreiundzwanzig, siebenunddreißig, etc.) — same compound-number pattern
as Menschen L4 (ones+und+tens: dreiundzwanzig = drei+und+zwanzig).

### Q2: Uhrzeit, Maße, Preise in Worten — extends Menschen L8
Formal/official spoken forms for times (zwölf Uhr fünfundvierzig),
prices (drei Euro fünfzig), and metric measurements (vier Komma fünf
Kilogramm).

**Tipp**: When a comma appears in numbers/measurements, it can also be
read in formal speech as "Komma": 4,5 kg = "vier Komma fünf Kilogramm";
0,9 m = "null Komma neun Meter."

### Q3, Q4: Ordinalzahlen und Datum — **new grammar beyond Menschen A1.1**

Ordinal numbers are used for **dates**: "der 23. Mai" is read "der
dreiundzwanzigste Mai." Full date format: "der [Ordinalzahl] [Monat]
[Jahr in Worten]" — e.g. "der dreiundzwanzigste Mai
neunzehnhundertneunundvierzig" (23 May 1949).

This entire ordinal-number and date-writing system is **not covered
anywhere in Menschen A1.1**, which only teaches cardinal numbers and
month names, not how to combine them into a spoken date.

## Exercise summary

1. **Q1 Fit in Zahlen!** — solve 14 addition problems, writing both
   addends and the sum in words, decoding a hidden-letter puzzle whose
   answer is a famous German mathematician/physicist.
2. **Q2 Zahlen, Zahlen, Zahlen …** — write out 14 clock times, prices,
   and measurements in full words.
3. **Q3 Die dritte Aufgabe!** — fill in 6 ordinal numbers (given as
   digits in parentheses) as words, in short dialogues.
4. **Q4 Der Wievielte ist heute?** — write 7 full dates in words,
   partly from letter-scrambled hints.

- Q1: Lösungswort (puzzle answer) = **Albert Einstein**. Sample: 3+20 =
  dreiundzwanzig; 5+7 = zwölf; 24+13 = siebenunddreißig; 59+34 =
  dreiundneunzig (full 14-item list in source PDF p.115 if needed).
- Q2: zwölf Uhr fünfundvierzig; drei Euro (und) fünfzig (Cent); vier
  Kilo(gramm) (und) fünfhundert Gramm; zwanzig Uhr fünfzehn; null Uhr
  zwanzig; zweihundertneunundvierzig Euro (und) neunzig (Cent); ein

## Notes / gotchas

- **Ordinal numbers and full-date writing are genuinely new** relative
  to Menschen A1.1 — treat this whole Abschnitt as bonus content that
  rounds out practical number fluency, not as review.
- **Q4's "Monat als Ordinalzahl" pattern** (der zwölfte Dritte = 12.3. =
  March 12th, literally "the twelfth third [month]") is a distinctly
  German way of stating dates numerically that has no direct English
  equivalent — worth explaining explicitly since it's a common source of
  confusion (Germans write dates DD.MM., and when spoken both day and
  month become ordinal numbers).
- **This closes out Wortschatz & Grammatik A1 in full** (Abschnitt A–Q,
  103 sub-exercises across 106 pages). The vocabulary/grammar map built
  across this book (see `Ergaenzung/INDEX.md`) can now be cross-
  referenced against Menschen A1.1's 12 lessons as a combined curriculum
  picture — several grammar points here (Imperativ, Dativ pronouns/
  prepositions, comparison, coordinating conjunctions, ordinal numbers)
  go usefully beyond what Menschen alone covers, while the vocabulary
  sections (A–H) are almost entirely supplementary domain vocabulary
  (body, weather, housing, shopping, travel, work, official life) not
  found in Menschen's numbered lessons at all.
