# Wortschatz & Grammatik A1 — Abschnitt I: Verben
|

Note: this is the first section of **Teil 2 Grammatik**, a differently
|
||
structured part of the book — grammar-topic based rather than
|
||
theme-based, with longer connected-text exercises instead of short
|
||
vocabulary drills.

## Overview
|
||
|
||
- Skill focus: Grammatik (verb conjugation, Imperativ, Perfekt,
|
||
Präteritum of sein/haben, modal verbs, mögen/möchte, polite requests)
|
||
- Topic: this is the book's central verb-grammar section, and it goes
|
||
considerably further than Menschen A1.1's Lektion 1–12 in several
|
||
places.
|
||
- Relates to *Menschen* Lektion(en): **L1–L4** (Präsens conjugation
|
||
review — I1–I3), **L7** (können, Satzklammer — I9 partially), **L9**
|
||
(mögen/möchte — I10), **L11/L12** (Perfekt with haben/sein — I6/I7).

**New beyond Menschen A1.1**: **Imperativ** (I5) is not taught at all
|
||
in the numbered Menschen lessons; **Präteritum of sein/haben as a full
|
||
paradigm** (I8) goes beyond Menschen's occasional war/hatte use;
|
||
**müssen, wollen, dürfen** (I9) are new modal verbs — Menschen A1.1
|
||
only introduces können; **polite requests with würden + Infinitiv**
|
||
(I11) is Konjunktiv II, generally considered **A2-level grammar**, well
|
||
beyond A1.1's scope.

## Grammar covered

||
|
||
### I1–I2: Präsens conjugation review (reinforces Menschen L1–L4)
|
||
Full-sentence dialogues drilling sein, heißen, kommen, wohnen, arbeiten,
|
||
spielen, finden, beginnen, sich freuen in all persons.
|
||
|
||
**Tipp (spelling rules for verb endings):**
|
||
- Verbs whose stem ends in **s, ß, z** drop the extra -s in the **du**
|
||
form: du heißt (not "heißst").
|
||
- Verbs whose stem ends in **t or d** insert an extra **e** in some
|
||
forms: du arbeitest, er arbeitet, ihr arbeitet.
|
||
|
||
### I3: Vokalwechsel-Verben (reinforces Menschen L7)
|
||
Paired contrast sentences drilling stem-vowel-changing verbs in du/er:
|
||
fahren→fährt, essen→isst, schlafen→schläft, sehen→sieht, waschen→wäscht,
|
||
helfen→hilft, laufen→läuft, nehmen→nimmt, lesen→liest, sprechen→spricht,

treffen→trifft.

### I4: Separable verbs in a connected narrative

A whole day narrated with separable verbs: aufwecken, vorbereiten,

### I5: Der Imperativ — **new grammar beyond Menschen A1.1**

The imperative drops the pronoun and often the final -e from the du-form
|
||
(nimm, not nimme). This entire mood is **not covered in Menschen A1.1**.
|
||
|
||
### I6–I7: Perfekt review (reinforces + extends Menschen L11/L12)
|
||
Connected-text and dialogue exercises mixing **haben-Perfekt** and
|
||
**sein-Perfekt** together (unlike Menschen, which introduces them one
|
||
lesson apart) — plus explicit use of **Präteritum war/hatte** alongside
|
||
Perfekt in the same narrative, which Menschen only touches lightly.
|
||
|
||
**Tipp**: For **sein** and **haben**, the spoken language usually prefers
|
||
the **Präteritum** (war, hatte) over the Perfekt (ist gewesen, hat
|
||
gehabt), even in casual conversation — this is a genuine exception to the
|
||
"always use Perfekt in speech" rule Menschen A1.1 teaches.
|
||
|
||
### I8: Präteritum of sein and haben — full paradigm, **new**

Menschen A1.1 uses isolated war/hatte forms in L12 but does not drill
|
||
the full paradigm — this section does.

**Tipp**: All modal verbs share the same form in the **1st and 3rd person
|
||
singular** (ich kann/muss/will/darf = er kann/muss/will/darf) and never
|
||
end in **-t** in these forms — a useful shortcut, and a common error
|
||
source for learners used to regular -t endings.
|
||
|
||
Only **können** is taught in Menschen A1.1 (L7); müssen, wollen, and
|
||
dürfen are genuinely new vocabulary/grammar here.
|
||
|
||
### I10: mögen vs. möchte (reinforces Menschen L9)

Same distinction as Menschen L9: **mögen** = general liking (a person, a
|
||
taste), **möchte** = a specific wish/request (an offer, an order).
|

||
### I11: Höfliche Bitten mit würden — **new, beyond A1.1 (≈A2 level)**
|
||
Pattern: **Würden Sie/würdest du bitte + Infinitiv (at the end)?**
|
||
- Machen Sie das Fenster zu! → Würden Sie bitte das Fenster zumachen?
|
||
- The book's own note: **könnte** works equally well instead of würde
|
||
(Könnten Sie bitte das Fenster zumachen?).
|
||
|
||
This is **Konjunktiv II**, a subjunctive mood not introduced in Menschen
|
||
A1.1 at all — it's typically A2 material. Treat this sub-exercise as
|
||
"nice to recognize" rather than something to require active production
|
||
of yet.
|
||

|
||
## Notes / gotchas
|
||
|
||
- **This section introduces real A1.1-exceeding grammar**: Imperativ
|
||
(I5), the full Präteritum sein/haben paradigm (I8), müssen/wollen/
|
||
dürfen (I9), and especially würden + Infinitiv (I11, which is A2-level
|
||
Konjunktiv II). An AI tutor should treat these as "extra credit"
|
||
content and not assume the student has internalized them just because
|
||
they've done Menschen A1.1 — especially I11.
|
||
- **I9's tip about modal-verb 1st/3rd person identity** is a genuinely
|
||
useful standing rule, not exercise-specific — worth surfacing whenever
|
||
modal verbs come up.
|
||
- **I6/I7 mix Perfekt and Präteritum in the same connected text**, which
|
||
is more natural/native-like than Menschen's cleaner one-tense-per-
|
||
lesson approach, but requires the student to already be comfortable
|
||
with Perfekt from L11/L12 before attempting it.
|
||
- **I11's "könnte instead of würde" note** is the book's own explicit
|
||
simplification — both forms are acceptable, so don't mark "könnte"
|
||
variants wrong if the student produces them instead of "würde."
