### Aussehen — Adjektivpaare (A17) — *beyond Menschen A1.1*
schön ↔ hässlich, jung ↔ alt, klein ↔ groß, dick ↔ dünn, lang ↔ kurz.

## Grammar (Tipp-Boxen in diesem Abschnitt)

- **Nomen schreibt man groß**, und man lernt sie am besten mit Artikel +
  Plural: die Straße, die Straßen; die Stadt, die Städte; das Land, die
  Länder.
- **Länder ohne Artikel** (most countries): Österreich, Deutschland,
  Frankreich, Italien, Brasilien, Russland, Japan ...
  **Länder mit Artikel**: die Schweiz, die Türkei, der Iran, der Irak, die
  USA (Pl), die Niederlande (Pl).
- **Genus bei Personen**: weibliche Personen → **die** (die Frau, die
  Freundin, die Tochter); männliche Personen → **der** (der Mann, der
  Freund, der Sohn). Ausnahme: **das** Baby, **das** Mädchen (grammatical
  neuter despite natural gender).
- **du oder Sie?** — im Zweifel **Sie** sagen (immer höflich; man kann
  später zum Du wechseln). Rule of thumb from A10: colleagues often use
  du; boss↔employee often Sie; children to strangers always Sie; young
  people (under ~25) to each other du; strangers over 25 to each other Sie;
  friends always du; adults to children/teens (up to ~15) du; students to
  students du. This is more explicit than anything *Menschen* A1.1 spells
  out directly.

## Exercise summary

1. **A1 Guten Tag** — fill in greeting-scene dialogue vocab (Tag, Name,
   Frau, Kollege, heißt/heiße/bin).
2. **A2 Hallo …** — match greeting phrases to time-of-day/region.

- A1: *Tag; Name; Frau* / *Kollege; Freut mich; guten; Tag* / *bin; heißt;
  heiße* / *Entschuldigung; Ihr; Arbeiten*
- A4: Familienname, Vorname, Geburtsdatum, Nationalität, Straße,
  Hausnummer, Postleitzahl, Wohnort (Stadt), Land, Telefonnummer, E-Mail,
  Beruf, Unterschrift.
- A8: Schweiz/Schweizer/Schweizerin/schweizerisch;
  Österreich/Österreicher/Österreicherin/österreichisch;

## Notes / gotchas

- **This book has its own built-in Lösungen** (answer key) at the back of
  the PDF — no separate answer-key document needed for this series.
- **A10 (du/Sie) and A17 (appearance adjectives) go beyond Menschen A1.1's
  explicit scope** — fine to use for extra vocabulary, but don't assume
  this level of nuance on du/Sie usage has been "taught" via Menschen
  alone.
- **das Baby, das Mädchen** are grammatically neuter despite referring to
  people with natural gender — worth flagging in exercises since it
  contradicts the die-Frau/der-Mann pattern just taught.
- Regional variants noted throughout: A = Austria, CH = Switzerland (e.g.
  Bub for Junge in Austria, Velo for Fahrrad in Switzerland — general
  pattern used across the whole book, not just this section).
