# Wortschatz & Grammatik A1 — Abschnitt I: Verben
Seiten 70–78 (Teil 2 Grammatik) · Lösungen S. 112–113 · Übungen I1–I11
Note: this is the first section of **Teil 2 Grammatik**, a differently
structured part of the book — grammar-topic based rather than
theme-based, with longer connected-text exercises instead of short
vocabulary drills.
## Overview
- Skill focus: Grammatik (verb conjugation, Imperativ, Perfekt,
Präteritum of sein/haben, modal verbs, mögen/möchte, polite requests)
- Topic: this is the book's central verb-grammar section, and it goes
considerably further than Menschen A1.1's Lektion 1–12 in several
places.
- Relates to *Menschen* Lektion(en): **L1–L4** (Präsens conjugation
review — I1–I3), **L7** (können, Satzklammer — I9 partially), **L9**
(mögen/möchte — I10), **L11/L12** (Perfekt with haben/sein — I6/I7).
**New beyond Menschen A1.1**: **Imperativ** (I5) is not taught at all
in the numbered Menschen lessons; **Präteritum of sein/haben as a full
paradigm** (I8) goes beyond Menschen's occasional war/hatte use;
**müssen, wollen, dürfen** (I9) are new modal verbs — Menschen A1.1
only introduces können; **polite requests with würden + Infinitiv**
(I11) is Konjunktiv II, generally considered **A2-level grammar**, well
beyond A1.1's scope.
## Grammar covered
### I1–I2: Präsens conjugation review (reinforces Menschen L1–L4)
Full-sentence dialogues drilling sein, heißen, kommen, wohnen, arbeiten,
spielen, finden, beginnen, sich freuen in all persons.
**Tipp (spelling rules for verb endings):**
- Verbs whose stem ends in **s, ß, z** drop the extra -s in the **du**
form: du heißt (not "heißst").
- Verbs whose stem ends in **t or d** insert an extra **e** in some
forms: du arbeitest, er arbeitet, ihr arbeitet.
### I3: Vokalwechsel-Verben (reinforces Menschen L7)
Paired contrast sentences drilling stem-vowel-changing verbs in du/er:
fahren→fährt, essen→isst, schlafen→schläft, sehen→sieht, waschen→wäscht,
helfen→hilft, laufen→läuft, nehmen→nimmt, lesen→liest, sprechen→spricht,
treffen→trifft.
### I4: Separable verbs in a connected narrative
A whole day narrated with separable verbs: aufwecken, vorbereiten,
abräumen, bringen, anfangen, schreiben, anrufen, fahren, abholen, kochen,
helfen, aufräumen, einkaufen, fernsehen, ausmachen, decken, aufhängen,
aufhören, einschlafen.
### I5: Der Imperativ — **new grammar beyond Menschen A1.1**
| Person | Formation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| du | verb stem (drop -st/-t; vowel-changing verbs keep the changed vowel but drop the final -t/-st) | nimm!, fahr!, gib!, sprich!, iss! |
| ihr | same as ihr-Präsens form | gebt!, seid!, geht! |
| Sie | Infinitiv + Sie | Kommen Sie!, Seien Sie! |
| sein (irregular) | sei / seid / seien Sie | Sei still! |
| haben (irregular) | hab / habt / haben Sie | Hab keine Angst! |
The imperative drops the pronoun and often the final -e from the du-form
(nimm, not nimme). This entire mood is **not covered in Menschen A1.1**.
### I6–I7: Perfekt review (reinforces + extends Menschen L11/L12)
Connected-text and dialogue exercises mixing **haben-Perfekt** and
**sein-Perfekt** together (unlike Menschen, which introduces them one
lesson apart) — plus explicit use of **Präteritum war/hatte** alongside
Perfekt in the same narrative, which Menschen only touches lightly.
**Tipp**: For **sein** and **haben**, the spoken language usually prefers
the **Präteritum** (war, hatte) over the Perfekt (ist gewesen, hat
gehabt), even in casual conversation — this is a genuine exception to the
"always use Perfekt in speech" rule Menschen A1.1 teaches.
### I8: Präteritum of sein and haben — full paradigm, **new**
| | sein (war) | haben (hatte) |
|---|---|---|
| ich | war | hatte |
| du | warst | hattest |
| er/sie/es | war | hatte |
| wir | waren | hatten |
| ihr | wart | hattet |
| sie/Sie | waren | hatten |
Menschen A1.1 uses isolated war/hatte forms in L12 but does not drill
the full paradigm — this section does.
### I9: Modalverben — müssen, wollen, dürfen, (können) — **new beyond können**
| | können | müssen | wollen | dürfen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | kann | muss | will | darf |
| du | kannst | musst | willst | darfst |
| er/sie/es | kann | muss | will | darf |
| wir | können | müssen | wollen | dürfen |
| ihr | könnt | müsst | wollt | dürft |
| sie/Sie | können | müssen | wollen | dürfen |
**Tipp**: All modal verbs share the same form in the **1st and 3rd person
singular** (ich kann/muss/will/darf = er kann/muss/will/darf) and never
end in **-t** in these forms — a useful shortcut, and a common error
source for learners used to regular -t endings.
Only **können** is taught in Menschen A1.1 (L7); müssen, wollen, and
dürfen are genuinely new vocabulary/grammar here.
### I10: mögen vs. möchte (reinforces Menschen L9)
| | mögen (to like) | möchte (would like) |
|---|---|---|
| ich | mag | möchte |
| du | magst | möchtest |
| er/sie/es | mag | möchte |
| wir | mögen | möchten |
| ihr | mögt | möchtet |
| sie/Sie | mögen | möchten |
Same distinction as Menschen L9: **mögen** = general liking (a person, a
taste), **möchte** = a specific wish/request (an offer, an order).
### I11: Höfliche Bitten mit würden — **new, beyond A1.1 (≈A2 level)**
Pattern: **Würden Sie/würdest du bitte + Infinitiv (at the end)?**
- Machen Sie das Fenster zu! → Würden Sie bitte das Fenster zumachen?
- The book's own note: **könnte** works equally well instead of würde
(Könnten Sie bitte das Fenster zumachen?).
This is **Konjunktiv II**, a subjunctive mood not introduced in Menschen
A1.1 at all — it's typically A2 material. Treat this sub-exercise as
"nice to recognize" rather than something to require active production
of yet.

## Notes / gotchas
- **This section introduces real A1.1-exceeding grammar**: Imperativ
(I5), the full Präteritum sein/haben paradigm (I8), müssen/wollen/
dürfen (I9), and especially würden + Infinitiv (I11, which is A2-level
Konjunktiv II). An AI tutor should treat these as "extra credit"
content and not assume the student has internalized them just because
they've done Menschen A1.1 — especially I11.
- **I9's tip about modal-verb 1st/3rd person identity** is a genuinely
useful standing rule, not exercise-specific — worth surfacing whenever
modal verbs come up.
- **I6/I7 mix Perfekt and Präteritum in the same connected text**, which
is more natural/native-like than Menschen's cleaner one-tense-per-
lesson approach, but requires the student to already be comfortable
with Perfekt from L11/L12 before attempting it.
- **I11's "könnte instead of würde" note** is the book's own explicit
simplification — both forms are acceptable, so don't mark "könnte"
variants wrong if the student produces them instead of "würde."
