# Lektion 11 — Was hast du heute gemacht?
Kursbuch S. 61–64 · Arbeitsbuch S. 84–89
## Overview
- Topic: Tagesablauf, Vergangenes (daily routine and past events)
- Communicative goals: ask and answer about what happened today/yesterday/last week; describe a day in order; read simple e-mails and a calendar.
- New grammar focus: **Perfekt mit haben** — German's everyday spoken past: `haben + Partizip II`; temporal expressions **von ... bis** and **ab**.
- Important scope: this is the first past tense in the course. The lesson teaches **haben**-Perfekt only; use *sein* with movement/change verbs only once it is explicitly introduced in Lektion 12.

## Grammar (Kursbuch S. 64)
### Perfekt mit haben: the everyday spoken past
To talk about completed past events, this lesson uses:
```text
haben (conjugated) + Partizip II (at the end)
Ich habe eine E-Mail geschrieben.
Von neun bis eins habe ich gearbeitet.
```
The helper verb **haben** takes position 2 and the participle goes at the **end of the clause**. This is another Satzklammer (verb bracket):
| Position 1 | Position 2 | middle | sentence end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ab 9 Uhr | habe | ich | gearbeitet. |
### Questions in Perfekt
| Type | Example |
|---|---|
| W-question | Was **hast** du heute gemacht? |
| Yes/no question | **Hast** du Frau Dr. Weber angerufen? |
| Short answer | Ja, habe ich. / Nein, habe ich nicht. |
### Partizip II patterns taught in this lesson
| Verb type | Infinitive → Partizip II | Example |
|---|---|---|
| regular | machen → gemacht | Ich habe Sport gemacht. |
| irregular | schreiben → geschrieben | Ich habe eine E-Mail geschrieben. |
| separable | aufräumen → aufgeräumt | Ich habe die Wohnung aufgeräumt. |
| separable | anrufen → angerufen | Ich habe Frau Weber angerufen. |
| verbs ending **-ieren** | telefonieren → telefoniert | Ich habe mit Tom telefoniert. |
The practical formation patterns are:
- Regular verbs usually form `ge- + stem + -t`: **gemacht**, **gelernt**, **gekauft**.
- Many irregular verbs form `ge- + altered stem + -en`: **geschrieben**, **gegessen**, **getrunken**, **gesehen**, **geschlafen**. Learn these individually.
- Separable verbs put the prefix before `ge`: **ein**laden → **ein**geladen; **auf**räumen → **auf**geräumt; **ein**kaufen → **ein**gekauft.
- Verbs ending in **-ieren** do **not** take `ge-`: telefonieren → **telefoniert**, fotografieren → **fotografiert**.
### Time expressions: von ... bis and ab
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| von 9 Uhr bis 10 Uhr | from 9 until 10 | Von neun bis eins habe ich gearbeitet. |
| ab 9 Uhr | from 9 onward | Ab neun Uhr habe ich gearbeitet. |
## Communication patterns (Kursbuch S. 64)
| Situation | Phrase(s) |
|---|---|
| Ask about the past | Was hast du heute / gestern / letzten Montag / letzte Woche gemacht? |
| Describe a timed activity | Von neun bis eins habe ich gearbeitet. |
| State a completed action | Ich habe eine E-Mail geschrieben. |
| Ask a yes/no past question | Hast du Frau Dr. Weber angerufen? |
| Say what is happening now | Jetzt räume ich noch auf, dann gehe ich schlafen. |
| Narrate a sequence | Am Vormittag habe ich ...; am Nachmittag habe ich ...; um 19 Uhr habe ich ... |
## Course book exercises (Kursbuch, S. 61–64)
1. Discuss how often and where you ride a bicycle, using time/frequency phrases such as *täglich*, *am Wochenende*, and *zum Einkaufen*.
2. Listening: infer information about Anja from a photo and city-travel sounds.
3. Read Anja's Monday calendar and role-play a phone call about what she is doing now and later; practise **von ... bis** and **ab**.
4. Recall Bildlexikon activities and say what you are doing after the German course.
5. Read two e-mails between Anja and Michi about their day, then identify their relationship, work, plans and completed activities.
6. Mark Perfekt forms in the e-mails and sort verbs into a table (regular, irregular, separable, and **-ieren** forms).
7. Partner information-gap and mime game: ask what someone did last Friday, with Perfekt questions and answers.
8. Write a short account of yesterday's schedule from notes; exchange and correct it with a partner.
## Workbook exercises (Arbeitsbuch, S. 84–89)
1. Complete Lisa's schedule with **um**, **am**, **von ... bis**, and **ab**.
2. Make your own daily calendar; a partner writes a short text from it.
3. Unscramble activity verbs, then use the correct present forms in questions about hobbies/routine.
4. Complete **haben** in questions and statements.
5. Complete Perfekt sentences with the correct form of **haben** and a participle: *gelernt, gegessen, eingeladen, gebacken, geschlafen, gekauft, gelesen*.
6. Sort 25 participles by ending (`...ge...t` / `...ge...en`) and connect each to its infinitive.
7. Build participles from pieces and complete Dennis's account of last Friday.
8. Reply to two SMS messages using Perfekt forms: *abgeholt, mitgebracht, eingekauft, eingeladen*.
9. Read Chiara's e-mail from Hamburg and decide which statements are true or false.
### Test (self-check)
1. Match common nouns to activity verbs (e.g. *Hausaufgaben machen*, *Fahrrad fahren*, *Freunde einladen*).
2. Write five Perfekt questions/answers about recent activities.
3. Complete a chat about Kelubia's and Neyla's day in Perfekt.
## Audio / Listening (official Hueber Transkriptionen)
Transcript source: **Official** (Hueber Transkriptionen, © 2012 Hueber Verlag).
### Kursbuch audio
**Aufgabe 2** consists of city-travel sounds while Anja moves through the city. It supports inferring who she is and where she is going from the visual context; the official transcript identifies it as non-verbal audio rather than a spoken dialogue.
### Workbook audio
No separate workbook dialogue is printed for this lesson. The official booklet points to the pronunciation exercises on Arbeitsbuch S. 87.

## Answer key highlights
**Kursbuch:**
- 5a (e-mail comprehension): Anja is getting a baby; Michi and Anja are a couple; Michi is on a business trip; he does not find his work very good; Anja worked in the morning; Barbara is Anja's friend.
- 7 (Anja's day): she works from 8:30 to 10:30; then has an appointment with Dr. Gregarek; eats with Lutz; returns to the office; shops; plays football; calls Lena; the occasion is a birthday.
**Arbeitsbuch:**
- 1: **Am** Montag frühstückt Lisa **um** 7 Uhr; **ab** 8 Uhr arbeitet sie; **von** 18 **bis** 19 Uhr kauft sie ein und kocht; **am** Abend geht sie ins Kino.
- 4: forms of **haben** are *Hast, habe, hat, haben, habt* as required by the subject.
- 5: *haben gelernt; habe gebacken; Hast eingeladen; habt gegessen; habe gekauft; habe gelesen*.
- 7: Dennis has written an e-mail, listened to music, played tennis, picked up his girlfriend, met friends in a café, cooked dinner, and danced in the disco.
- 8: *Ich habe Paula schon abgeholt. Sie hat super Wein mitgebracht.* / *Wir haben eingekauft. Wir laden auch Susanne zum Essen ein.*
- 9: Chiara has a new job; has fun with colleagues; does not work until 19:00 every day; often meets colleagues after work; likes visiting Tamara; does not yet say whether she finds Rainer nice.
**Test:**
- Example answers: *Am Nachmittag habe ich Fußball gespielt.* / *Hast du Monika gesehen? — Wir haben viel gelacht.* / *Was hast du zum Frühstück gegessen? — Müsli. Und ich habe einen Kaffee getrunken.*
## Notes / gotchas
- **Do not use the simple past for ordinary conversation here.** At this level, say *Ich habe gearbeitet*, not *Ich arbeitete*.
- **The participle belongs at the end.** `Ich habe heute Deutsch gelernt.` Not `Ich habe gelernt heute Deutsch.`
- **Separable prefixes stay attached to the participle in Perfekt:** *Ich habe eingekauft*, not *Ich habe gekauft ein*.
- **-ieren is the exception to ge-.** *telefoniert* and *fotografiert* never get `ge-`.
- **Do not generalise haben to all German past events.** This lesson deliberately introduces only **Perfekt mit haben**. Lektion 12 adds the **sein** pattern for movement/change verbs, so an AI tutor should not demand it before then.
- In temporal phrases, **von ... bis** has both endpoints; **ab** has only a start and continues afterward.
