# Lektion 10 — Ich steige jetzt in die U-Bahn ein.

## Overview
- Topic: Verkehrsmittel, Reisen (transport and travel)
- Communicative goals: understand public-transport announcements; ask for and give travel information; arrange to collect someone; end a phone call.
- New grammar focus: **trennbare Verben** (separable-prefix verbs), especially their split form in main clauses; strong verb **nehmen** (du nimmst, er/sie nimmt).

## Grammar (Kursbuch S. 60)
### Trennbare Verben — the separable-verb rule
A separable verb has a prefix attached in the infinitive: **anrufen**, **einkaufen**, **einsteigen**. In a normal main clause, the conjugated verb takes position 2 and its prefix moves to the **end of the clause**.

This creates a **Satzklammer** (verb bracket), first introduced with *können* in Lektion 7. Here, the bracket is formed by one separable verb: conjugated stem in position 2 + prefix at the end.
### Questions with separable verbs
The prefix still goes at the end in both question types.

### Important distinction: separable vs. non-separable
Not every verb with a prefix splits. In this lesson, **telefonieren** and **bekommen** stay together:
- Wann **telefonierst** du mit Oma? (not: *telefonierst ... an*)
- **Bekomme** ich bitte einen Kaffee? (not: *komme ... be*)
At this stage, learn each new prefixed verb together with its full infinitive and one complete model sentence.

The vowel changes **e → i** only in du and er/sie/es, as with *essen*, *sprechen*, and *treffen* from earlier lessons.

## Course book exercises (Kursbuch, S. 57–60)
1. Listening: identify sounds related to travel (e.g. hairdryer, train, sea, ship horn, a child singing) with Wörterbuch support.
2. Listening and photo comprehension: locate a man (airport or station) and identify whether he gets on or off.
3. Listening: match photos of the man to statements about his phone call, location, travel and arrival.
4. Repeat listening and sort sentences; complete station-announcement phrases and separable-verb endings.
5. Complete five main clauses and write each verb's infinitive: *einsteigen, ankommen, anrufen, einkaufen, fernsehen*.
6. Partner information-gap conversation: arrange a pickup and give an arrival time (S. 88/94).
7. Build word webs for station vocabulary, transport and luggage; match travel photos to statements and ask/answer travel questions.

1. Complete transport vocabulary from word pieces (*Flughafen, Haltestelle, Bahnsteig, Vorsicht*) in short travel exchanges.
2. Identify six verbs from pictures: *ankommen, anrufen, einsteigen, fernsehen, einkaufen, aussteigen*.
3. Mark verbs in messages and give their infinitives; recognise both separable and non-separable verbs.
4. Decide whether verbs are separable and fill in the correct split form in statements/questions; contrast with *telefonieren* and *bekommen*.
5. Write original sentences following the separable-verb pattern.
6. Build six correct statements/questions from word groups.

- In separable verbs, stress is on the separable prefix: **AB**fahren, **AN**kommen, **EIN**steigen, **MIT**bringen.
- Practise paired base verbs and prefixed forms: *kommen/ankommen, kaufen/einkaufen, sehen/fernsehen, bringen/mitbringen*.

1. Build travel words from fragments (e.g. *Straßenbahn, Flughafen, Bahnsteig, Haltestelle*).

## Notes / gotchas
- **The prefix goes to the end only in main clauses.** For this course level, use the simple rule: *Ich steige ein; Wann steigst du ein?* Do not leave the prefix attached in an ordinary sentence: not *Ich einsteige ...*.
- **Do not split non-separable verbs.** *telefonieren* and *bekommen* are intentionally contrasted with separable verbs in the workbook.
- **Transport prepositions matter:** *in die U-Bahn einsteigen* (destination/movement); *am Bahnhof aussteigen* (location); *auf Gleis 10* (platform/track).
- **Station German is compressed:** announcements may omit normal conversational wording, e.g. *Aussteigen bitte in Fahrtrichtung links*. Treat it as a listening-recognition pattern, not necessarily your default speaking model.
- The polite/formal announcement imperative is **steigen Sie ... um**, while the informal form is **steig ... um**. Keep *du* and *Sie* separate as in Lektion 1.
